Doig is a fabulous writer. I'm enjoying this book tremendously... but then I do love reading about the lives of the early homesteaders, especially when it's true to life and not romanticized. This one reads almost like a memoir (maybe it is one? Except that it's set in 1909-10.)
I read this book as a child and then re-read it as a teacher to my class. It is a very powerful book about friendship and individuality. I love to re-read books from my childhood, because I have such a different perspective now.
Of all his work, this book is the most difficult to penetrate. An interesting depiction of a community plagued with disease and in desperate search for life's daily treasures. You might recognize it from the movie "Serendipity" where it served as fate's prop.
