This is a sister book to "When Heaven Invades Earth". See the review for that book to see what both of these offer.

I didn't enjoy this book as much as the first I think because when you read a first in a series, you're less jaded, less tired of this or that quirk about the characters, or even the voice of the character. Don't get me wrong, I did like it, and couldn't stop reading to know what would happen. Actually, now that I think of it, there was a good portion of the book that I wished something would happen. Like other reviewers have said, I was over the whole normal life Evie. I was tired of her "bleep" this and that, even though I knew why she cursed like that. Jack was new, but I couldn't stand him. There was no appeal to me in his immature attitude, even if he did mean fun and Evie getting away from her life for a moment with him. He remained annoying. I felt like there was way too much hints to side issues that I guess will be revealed in book three. The number of incidents made me think the book would conclude with us learning what those were about. It did not. The more up front and center issues, like who was now targeting Evie was resolved in the end, and it was glaringly obvious who was behind it. Someone mentioned that they hated how Lend responded to finding out he's immortal. They thought it was insufficient. I read that before I was done with the book, and it soured me, making me think when I got there that I wouldn't be satisfied. I blame that on my own assumptions. I strongly disagree with this assessment. Lend said a lot more than the reviewer said he did, and I felt he said just what he needed to. I believe his words did have depth and meaning for him. Why? Because he was speaking as a human boy of eighteen. You don't necessarily blink into a different personality because you find out a truth about yourself. Evie learns the truth about herself in this book. It felt insufficient to me, but it's what the author chose, and I accept that. Overall, I gave this book a good rating because the author kept me engrossed, and that's what I wanted.
