We learn about neurosurgery as he mulls over his caseload for the day, update ourselves about how top-flight jazz musicians play as he thinks about his son, wonder why we didn't take up squash when he describes his thoughts while playing an anesthesiologist. We read through a grandfather's critique of the daughter's poetry that has just been published, learn about the stages of drunkenness the grandfather is going through, are amazed at how he avoids being mugged after his car was sideswiped by a BMW by diagnosing the perpetrator's physical impairments, sympathize as he visits his mother in a nursing home and quotes her deranged sentences because of cognitive decline, then salivate as we feel as if we're in his kitchen as he prepares a seafood stew. All of this with dictionary in hand. An unexpected visitor/ would-be assassin tops it all off toward the end. A lot of research went into this one.
