What an intense ride. Everyone in Travis' life either does drugs or drinks, and when he comes home from college (he flunked the semester) for the summer, after ignoring all of his friends, the party immediately picks up. Travis never meets his "perfect" parents expectations, and he can't escape the temptations all around him. He was never the greatest guy in high school, and his bad reputation has followed him everywhere. The heavy drugs and drinking made me feel super uncomfortable especially when I realized there was no end in sight. What would be the breakthrough, I kept asking myself. EXIT HERE isn't a story about happy endings or everything falling into place -- it's just not. Travis has to come to terms with his past, and (I was hoping) escape the bad influences that are all around him. (Like ALL AROUND HIM.) EXIT HERE is dark and completely heartbreaking. Readers who don't mind YAs with a ton of recklessness and adult situations in them should definitely pick this one up. Jason Myers is a fantastic writer, who crafted a FULL story with great character development and so many so many feelings. This book was published in 2007 and I couldn't help but think it's a well-done New Adult in many ways. Kids out of high school and in the real world. Even though these characters made one bad decision after another (and normally this would frustrate me and ruin my reading experience), I was totally captivated and probably could have read EXIT HERE in one sitting.

A great re-read ... although it's probably altogether a preposterous story, the "fairy-tale" in it is enough to keep my interest. Being a very easy read made it a good one for an especially hectic time in my life.

Finally finished. I had put it down, I don't know why. And then picked it back up again. He's a great writer and the ending is sad. An enjoyable read. I might re-read it.
