Such a good story. I understand why it was controversial in 1956, or whenever the first edition came out. But wow, what a dramatic and lovely story. I recommend it -- along the lines of great novels with strong, central, female characters such as A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, Little Women, and Island of the Blue Dolphins.
