My 3rd-and favourite-Goddard to date. Lots of twists in a quite intriguing tale of revenge and misplaced loyalties. The ending was rather saccharine coated, but nonetheless wound up the tale quite adequately. I'm finding these novels rather interesting-some good insights into the motivations of the characters, and a fast enough moving plot to keep the pages turning. More depth would be appreciated at times-but guess that could be counter productive, and the plot would inevitably need to play a secondary role to the character development! Having said that, every peice of information given is important to the final conclusion, so Goddard does need to be read carefully, with all clues safely stored in the memory for future use.

** spoiler alert ** Ippo faces off in a spar against the featherweight champion, Date Eiji. Eiji uses him to practice one of his new attacks, a corkscrew punch aimed at the heart. When it hits Ippo, Ippo is briefly paralyzed and Eiji knocks him down. To Eiji's amazement, Ippo manages to get back up and continue. He hits Ippo with it again and Ippo rises from it for a second time. At the end of the match, Ippo finally loses consciousness, but amazes everyone with his stamina when he is able to happily run off after thanking Eiji for the experience. He then has a snack with Barf-michi. When his friend remarks on how strong he is, he tells him about how he too was bullied until he found something to dedicate himself to. The next day, he finds out that Keigo Okita, from Eiji's same boxing club and the number 5 featherweight, has invited him to a match. Ippo's new goal has become fighting Eiji for real, so he says he wants to accept the match. We find out that Okita, as a great admirer of Eiji, was hurt that Eiji chose Ippo instead of himself for practicing his heart punch. At their match, it turns out that Ippo has gained a large number of followers. He manages to win despite Okita's Eiji-inspired style, becoming the 5th ranked featherweight in the country.

I loved this book. It is an easy read, which I feel is essential for any parenting book. Who has time to read a parenting book for a week when a solution is needed now? It very clearly and logically outlines feeding your newborn and developing child on a schedule and the usual benefits of following that program. I absolutely believe that to minimize "mommy brain" and get to sleeping through the night sooner, children need to be on a schedule. Here's the crux of my review: every child is different. I have two very different children. This book was PERFECT for my oldest. She followed this book to the letter and has developed into a well-adjusted, happy four year old. The only adjustment I made was to feed my daughter every 2 1/2 hours instead of 3. Following this book was never an option for my second child. As much as I tried to get her on a schedule, I was never successful, and I just learned to be sensitive to her needs. The end result: my first daughter slept through the night beginning at 8 weeks and never back-tracked. My second daughter didn't sleep through the night until 9 months and is still reluctant to do so. I'm still searching for the perfect book for her situation. I think every parent should read this and balance it with another book like The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding or some other demand feeding based book. By reading both sides of the argument, I felt like I knew where in the middle my kids needed me to be.
