"Before you leave," I told them, "I would like to conduct a brief symposium on love." I took out a red marker--I mean, why not?--and wrote the word love on the board. "Here we have it," I said. "Love. It exists in this pristine state, upholding its ideals. But then...along come words." I wrote words over and over again, all around the dry erase board, including over the word love. "And feelings." I wrote feelings in the same way, crisscrossing it on top of everything I'd already written. "And expectations. And history. And thoughts. Help me out here Boomer." We wrote each of these words at least twenty times each. The result? Pure illegibility. Not only was love gone, but you couldn't make out anything else, either. I thought this book was going to be good. I thought it was going to be amusing, but pretty much like a chick flick and just light, happy reading. I was very happy to find myself proven wrong. This book had much more to it than I was expecting. Dash and Lily were very realistic, each with their own fears and problems. They had to deal with serious questions that everyone asks themselves at one point or another, and they found the answers they were searching for. There was one part of the story that I found a little unbelievable, and that was Dash's quick change of heart after his first meeting with Lily. His decision seemed completely out of character to me. As a teacher, I would like to have this book on hand to pass along, but I cannot see myself teaching this title. The storyline was enjoyable, but I am not sure about what I would address with this book. I do think that it has some ideas about relationships that can be insightful for young adults, but I think that they should be found by students personally.

** spoiler alert ** I loved it. I loved the flawed characters, loved the romance, mixed with D/s and kink. As much as I was warned about certain things, I had no problem with the open nature of the relationship, Randy and/or his relationship with Mitch. They were men with a past to put behind them and I thought Heidi handled that perfectly. I have a humiliation squick (humiliation/unfairness is a really fine line ... I find David Copperfield hard to watch - let alone read), but this didn't even come close to that for me. Sam went into every situation out of his own free will, often second guessed by Mitch and encouraged by him to tell him if he didn't want to do what was asked of him. The one time Sam is really pushed to do something outside his comfort zone in that department, he safeworded and set his limits. Also, Mitch makes a great observation on the subject: “Sam likes a different kind of domination. Some humiliation, yeah, but inside his own head. He doesn’t like to see it from other people.” Having lost my own mother 17 years ago (march 12 to be exact), I love how Sam gave her the trip of her life and made sure to leave a trace of her in the most beautiful spots and then left the beautiful box containing the rest of her ashes with Mitch, so she could see even more of the world she had never been able to travel. It really touched me.
