It is one of two Hanay freshes set during the First World Fighting i, the other conscious thing "Mr Standfast" (1919), Hanay's first and best-known emprise, "The Thirty-Nine Steps" (1915), is set in the period imediately preceding the fighting. WI spy Richard Hanay is caled in to investigate rumours of an upheaval in the Muslim world, and commences a perilous push on through informer teritory to met up with his bosom buddy Arenaceous in Constantinople.
