** spoiler alert ** ”Embers” is very well written plotwise, it was easy to follow the different plotlines with the arsonist, DAGR and the demonic possesion, even if I had some issues with what happened, at least I got what happened. Some UF can get very confusing in that respect and you end up just going along with events that you don't really understand because you are invested in the characters and you're just happy they survived. (example, the latest Kate Daniels book). Here, the problem is that you don't actually care if Anya and the rest make it... It's not that Anya is unlikable, on the contrary, she could have been an interesting UF heroine. But the writing is just too... bland I guess would be the word. I can't even put my finger on why it isn't working, but ”Embers” didn't evoke one single feeling when I read it. No, that's actually not true, I experienced very mild surprise when Anya out of the blue slept with the bad guy. And when not even such a turn of event made me feel more, you know something's missing. I read ”The Hob's Bargain" by Patricia Briggs a while ago and in literally the first ten pages she managed to break my heart over characters that I only just started to read about. I will still read the next one in the series, because I already bought it and while this wasn't the best read I've had, I wasn't bored out of my head. Sparky was an original idea that I enjoyed and I'm curious to see if she manages to turn computer geek Brian into a proper UF hero/love interest. Poor guy was in a come for most of this book while his girl was getting it on with the far more charismatic baddie.
