Hayat Hikayem
I just finished this book and I'm not sure how I feel about it. It seems like most of you on this site have rated it a 5 or 4...not too many 3's or lower. I'm just not sure what all the fuss is about and it amazes me that it won the Pulitzer. It was interesting that it showed the extremes to which humans will go to survive. Some turn to murder and cannibalism (bad guys), while others choose to maintain their innate sense of goodness and decency (good guys). And not surprisingly, there seemed to be a lot more bad guys left in the world than good ones. I was glad the book was so short otherwise I might have put it down, but I did want to see how it ended. The clipped writing style worked perfectly for this story seeing how each page was basically the same until the ending, which I thought was kind of lame. Walking, walking, scavenging, walking, walking, misery, walking, scavenging, walking, misery, walking, you get the picture. Granted, I am not a real fan of post-apocolyptic stories to begin with, but this one was more dark and depressing than most. I know the message was to press on and "carry the fire" no matter what but the boy was tortured in the process. If that is love, then I must not love my children enough, because I'm pretty sure I would not have subjected a child to that.

Interesting story about China under Mao that really was an interesting and quick read. It was also amazing to think that this was a true story.

I read this in just a day. It is so moving and powerful. Thsi made me cry so many times, at so many things in the story. It's shocking just how much tragedy they put into it, but that just makes it so much more believable. It's saying that not everyone can have a happy ending. The main character himself goes through changes and you start to think about all kinds of things. I can't say much to tell just how haunting his past was for him, or tell you how you'll recieve the story, but I can tell you that you won't be dissapointed when you read it.
