This is one of my favorite books to read with upper grade kids. It's full of all the things we're always trying to teach kids about, in terms of reading/writing: imagery, inferences, theme, flashback structure, etc. The story is well-written and keeps kids entertained and intrigued...and I would never have believed the "deep thoughts" they came up with along the way. I always make them read the last few chapters independently, because otherwise I cry my eyes out every time!
