This is a profoundly racist and romanticized story. On the other hand, plenty of insightful works are, and Roth certainly passing the test of parading a point of view on a place, time, and condition. His central tenets are: 1. If you ape the desires, interests, and values of another tribe, you will become their monkey. 2. There is no America. There are only a group of competing tribes. If you forget that basic lesson, you will suffer greatly. Better stay with you own because you can only trust them. (And what earns this book the “RACIST” label is his clear indication that one tribe is blameless, hard working, and seeking justice… or at least very little at blame). 3. Even the best people do bad things. There’s another central theme of the book. The competition between the “Greatest Generation” which worked and saved to build a legacy and it’s following “Me” generation that spent that legacy. His rants on the subject are well thought out and fairly presented. I would strongly recommend this book to friends and family. It is insightful. If I have complaints about some of the ideas in the book… it’s not that those ideas aren’t given a fair hearing, nor that they don’t exist. It’s that they do exist, and there’s a rational argument to support them… even if I don’t agree.
