A very solid premise is undermined by a lack of depth. Catherine Allingham is is considered the smartest person alive, and possibly the world's greatest detective. She picks up an intelligent assistant for his brain and muscle as she is heading out to investigate the world's first allegedly quantum crime. Her character hook? An inoperable brain tumor that will kill her in 6 months, and she wants to answer the one question no one else has. What lies beyond death. This is all a very solid base, but the crime, the investigation, and the one lingering mystery undercut the premise a bit.

Max Brooks se ha convertido a sí mismo en el gurú de culto al zoombie, primero con su Guía de Supervivencia y ahora con este informe lleno de “factor humano” en la que hace de investigador sobre la Guerra Mundial que sobrevivió el plantea contra los zombies. El mundo a duras penas superó el ataque de un enemigo que no se desmoraliza, no siente temor, no come, no duerme, no respira, no se asusta y lo deja. "No tienes que ser el puto Sun Tzu para saber que la verdadera batalla no consiste en matar, ni siquiera en herir al otro, sino en asustarlos lo suficiente para que lo deje.". Un enemigo que al mermar las filas del contrincante engrosa las propias, un enemigo invencible y determinado a avanzar y devorar: comer lo que esté vivo. Más allá del tema absurdo o ridículo, creíble o risible de la posibilidad de que los muertos se levanten, caminen y ataquen, está la construcción de esta historia armada con los testimonios de sus protagonistas, victimas, héroes, y, claro oportunistas de ocasión. "El miedo, el miedo es la mercancía más valiosa del universo. Encended la televisión ¿Qué veis? ¿Gente vendiendo productos? NO. Gente vendiendo el miedo que tenéis de vivir sin sus productos. El miedo vende" La novela aborda con tal seriedad el asunto que para el quinto testimonio te has olvidado de lo imposible de todo aquello porque la historia se metió en la piel y estás de lleno interesado en lo que tienen que contar los militares, científicos, industriales, políticos, ecologistas, supermodelos, amas de casa, freak de internet, etc Porque la verdadera amenaza no son los zombies, sino la propia humanidad. "Los monstruos que salían de sus tumbas no son nada comparados con los que llevamos dentro del corazón." En comparación a todo lo que ya conocemos de los zombies aporta varias novedades determinantes. Para mi, la más personal es que sea una novela y no una película. (Es mi primera novela sobre zombies!) La principal es el modo realista en que trata el tema el autor al abordarlo como él mismo y con el corte de documento oficial. Que se trata de un rollo global. No es un brote aislado en un pueblecito o en un solo país, ni de un grupete de adolescentes, ni de una noche, un amanecer o una ciudad (con amor a Romero). Se trata de una situación de emergencia mundial. Los primeros brotes son escondidos, pero “la plaga andante” no tarda nada en esparcirse y reproducirse rápida y cuantiosamente. El tema la desinformación en un mundo “globalizado”. Una vez que es imposible ocultar que hay algo que hace que la gente muerta se levante y te persiga para morderte nadie sabe qué es exactamente, nadie quiere admitir que son zombies, y nadie sabe qué hacer y todo lo hace mal, por ejemplo la gente se tira de cabeza a lugares donde son más vulnerables, o emigran a climas extremos sin llevar lo necesario, la milicia usa técnicas y armamento totalmente inútil que termina perjudicándolos, los gobiernos toman medidas tan extremas como diezmar a la población... Cada pequeña equivocación se convierte en un desastre de proporciones mayores: "No sé si los grandes hombres son productos de tiempos difíciles, pero sé que pueden ser sus víctimas." Esta la Negación. No esto no puede estar pasando, es mentira, es un montaje… si fuese real ya está bajo control, no hay nada que temer ¡hasta que tienes zombies saliéndote de las cajas de cereal! También está la Denuncia en la novela. Esto no es realmente una "novedad", los fans del género, los que no están locos de atar claro, reconocen que el recurso del zombie es un medio para denunciar aspectos sociales y humanos que ciertamente nos acercan a la extinsión. Pero en el tema para que sea completo no puede faltar la Denuncia, a la manipulación de poder, político y económico, a la explotación, a la negligencia, a la discriminación, a la ignorancia, etc… Los gobiernos empiezan a mentirle a la gente, la industria comienza a vender vacunas, los mercenarios empiezan a comercializar vidas, los políticos quieren votos, los militares quieren usar el armamento nuclear… ¡una varianza pues! Cualquier parecido con la mera realidad… no es coincidencia. El Pánico es lo peor. La gente empieza a salir de sus países, en condiciones infrahumanas buscando asilos. Las personas empiezan a enloquecer por distintos motivos y de diferentes formas, hay gente que no puede cuidarse a sí misma que se quedan abandonados a su suerte, como niños, ancianos o discapacitados (que sin embargo sobreviven he!) El miedo, la desorientación, el hambre y la menesterosidad se apoderan de la humanidad. A esas alturas, ya los zombies no son la única amenaza. Finalmente el Enfrentamiento. Bueno en la Noche de los muertos vivientes y en Undead se ve que los humanos toman las cosas por el mango y se cargan a los muertos, pero en la novela no se trata de unos pocos zombicitos renqueantes, se trata de miles de millones de zombicitos renqueantes en toda la tierra. (imagina toda China infectada, toda Japón, toda África, toda India....) Con -por supuesto- Estados Unidos a la cabeza, la milicia sobreviviente se organiza y enfrenta a la amenaza de exterminio… En conjunto se trata de una gran novela que, a mi parecer, no dejó cabos sueltos, porque abarca desde el drama individual o de una familia, los problemas de obediencia militar, los equipos aéreos, la situación de alimentación y salud, hasta el papel de los astronautas en el espacio y el de las unidades caninas durante la crisis. Brooks entretejió todo de una manera esplendida para dar de verdad el efecto “Mundial” al asunto. Es decir, vaya trabajo creativo y de empatía con la situación y los personajes que se armó este Max para darnos los detalles tecnológicos, militares, sociales, económicos y políticos de cómo la civilización estuvo al borde de la extinción en la lucha total contra los muertos vivientes. Una lucha que dejó a la humanidad malherida y con mucho no sólo por reconstruir del mundo sino de sí misma. Cada testimonio es un relato corto (por eso el libro aunque es grueso se lee como la seda), relatos a los que les critiqué sus finales abiertos (detesto los finales no concluyentes) o que fuesen demasiado cortos cuando yo quería y necesitaba saber qué más le pasó a tal o cual personaje. De entre todos esos relatos cortos, uno y sólo uno, se lleva la palma de oro para mi, virtuosamente hablando, es decir es el único que tiene genio narrativo independiente; se trata del protagonizado por la Coronel Christina Eliopolis (Base de la Guardia Nacional Aérea de Parnell, Tennessee.) Claro que otras historias me tocaron profundamente, la del submarino japonés, la del astronauta, la del indio en los muelles, la del entrenador de perros… es que realmente no se trata de zombies, sino de la gente en el mundo. En fin… que ya están por allí tratando de llevarla al cine, hay relatos que simplemente no puedes dejar fuera, pero es imposible que no mutilen las historias… en todo caso es un gran reto ponerla en la pantalla grande con grandes posibilidades de que la vuelvan pupa. Yo te recomiendo que te leas el libro, así lo hagas sólo en el baño!

This is the first book in the Inkheart Trilogy by Funke. I have enjoyed previous books by Funke including The Thief Lord, The Dragon Rider, and Reckless. So, I was excited to read this book. I listened to this on audio and the audio book is exceedingly well done and was a joy to listen to. Maggie lives with her father who is a bookbinder and she absolutely adores books. Then one night a mysterious visitor arrives named Dustfinger. Dustfinger tells Maggie's father that Capricorn is looking for the Book. Maggie doesn't know what book but when her and her father suddenly have to leave on a mysterious trip, Maggie thinks it must be related to Dustfinger's visit. Suddenly Maggie is being drawn in to things more dangerous, more magical, and more heart-breaking than anything she has previously dealt with. Maggie will have to be resourceful and brave if she is to combat evil and save the world from an even greater evil. This is a very well written book. I enjoyed the writing style and loved the way Funke's descriptions really make the world come alive for the reader. The bad guys are definitely evil and idea of a book literally coming alive as it is read from is interesting, if not completely original. The characters are okay. They are all very human and easy to relate to. I was a bit disappointed that they weren't more proactive. For much of the book Maggie, her father, and Eleanor let Capricorn and his men push them around, constantly dictating what they would do. Maggie in particular acts young for her 12-13 years of age. Maggie spends a lot of time whining and bemoaning the fact that she can't help; she is really dependent on her father and has trouble taking action herself. I just felt that she was acting more like an 8 or 9 year old than a pre-teen and that bothered me. None of the characters are particularly likable; for the most part they are selfish. Even Maggie's father is willing to set aside Maggie's well-being if it means he gets what he's been longing for, and that is just not very admirable. This book is probably aimed at a bit older crowd, more young adult, than middle grade. I was hoping for a middle grade fantasy I could read with my son. At points though this book talks about torture, cutting people up with knives, burning people with fire; sexual abuse of the females in Capricorn's village is implied if never discussed in detail. Definitely not something I would read to a younger child. For the most part the book is very dark in tone and very scary at points. It is not a magic scary, but a people killing each other in the real world kind of scary. My other complaint is the plot. I expected it to be more magical, there is some magic here but not much. Most of the book is escape and capture scenarios repeated over and over. First they are captured, they escape, they are captured, they escape...it was all very predictable. The book ends well with the major plot points wrapped up. I enjoyed how things were resolved in the end and, while the end is fairly predictable, it was well done. They are a few questions that remain unanswered, which I assume will be the story told in the second book Inkspell. Overall this was a well written book with wonderful descriptions; the writing style is wonderful and really top notch. The characters weren't my favorite, I especially thought Maggie was a bit immature for her age. It is too dark of a book to read with younger children. The plot was fairly predictable but the idea of things coming alive from a book is a fun one. I am on the fence right now as to whether or not I will read the next book Inkspell. I own both Inkspell and Inkdeath, but I was really hoping for more magic and more of a middle grade level read, so I am not sure whether I will continue reading this or not.
