Joan Didion's sentences are so concise and direct that her books might at first look simplistic. However, really her sentences are just highly crafted. Didion does not put in extra words when she does not need them. This style works well with this book which is a sort of compilation of Didion's thoughts and feelings the year after her husband died and while her daugher was struggling to live (and sadly died right after the book was finished). She muses on grief and with great insight describes feelings that many have also felt at the death of a loved one. This is a powerful book.
